PC Harper's Killers to Stay Jailed! PM Blocks Early Release Scheme

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced significant changes to the early prison release scheme, ensuring that PC Andrew Harper's killers and hundreds of other dangerous offenders will remain behind bars. The decision comes as a direct response to widespread public concern and the Prime Minister's personal commitment to prevent the early release of those convicted of serious crimes.

Under the revised scheme, individuals convicted of unlawful killing, which includes manslaughter and death by dangerous driving, will be explicitly excluded from early release. This crucial amendment means that Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole, who were convicted of the manslaughter of PC Harper in 2019, will not have their sentences shortened.

The changes also extend to prisoners serving time for indecent assault and historic child sex offenses, ensuring that these "vile criminals" do not benefit from schemes designed to ease prison overcrowding. Mr. Burnham emphasized his understanding of public anger regarding this issue.

"I know how strongly people feel about this issue.

I understand the concern and anger because I share it,

he stated. He added that he moved quickly during his first weeks as Prime Minister to block the release of some of the

very worst in society" and can now "look victims in the eye" with confidence that he has done everything possible. To accommodate these changes and prevent further pressure on the prison system, the government plans to create additional prison space.

This will be achieved by deporting foreign offenders and ending indefinite jail terms, policies that have been campaigned on for some time. The Prime Minister affirmed that he "couldn't have pushed the system any further" to secure these outcomes, marking a significant policy shift aimed at bolstering public safety and trust in the justice system.
