Fraud's Hidden Cost: Scams Wreak Havoc on Victims' Mental Health ๐
Beyond financial loss, fraud devastates mental health. A new Which? report reveals over half of scam victims suffer stress, shame & depression. #FraudImpact #MentalHealth
Fraud isn't just about losing money; it leaves deep, lasting scars on its victims' mental well-being, according to a recent warning from consumer group Which?. A comprehensive survey, involving over 1,500 individuals across the UK who had fallen prey to scams in the past two years, reveals a harrowing truth about the hidden costs of financial crime.
More than half, specifically 54% of respondents, reported that the experience had severely impacted their mental health. The psychological toll extends further, with 63% grappling with heightened stress levels, and 47% facing significant blows to their financial stability. These figures paint a stark picture of the widespread emotional devastation caused by scams.
The survey highlighted various methods fraudsters employ. Unauthorised fraud was the most prevalent, accounting for a staggering 60% of cases. This includes instances where bank account or card details were illicitly obtained (44%), or physical cards, mobile phones, and other devices were stolen by opportunistic thieves (16%).
Impersonation scams also featured prominently, making up 35% of the reported incidents.
In these cases, victims were cunningly manipulated into authorising payments to fraudsters who deceptively posed as trustworthy organisations or individuals. The remaining 5% comprised other insidious scam types.
Victims' testimonies underscore the profound emotional distress. One individual confessed, "It has made me feel stupid and ashamed. I haven't fully told my family.
I have tried to cover up the full financial loss." Another shared the immense strain on their personal life, stating, "I was so nervous and stressed. It had a big impact on my marriage as well. My husband thinks I don't have enough knowledge to maintain my finances.
I'm so depressed." A third victim poignantly expressed, "My mental health was affected very badly. I feel like a failure." These heartfelt accounts reveal a common thread of shame, isolation, and diminished self-worth that often accompanies fraud.
Which? is vehemently advocating for greater accountability from technology companies, asserting that they must do more to combat scams proliferated on their platforms. Rocio Concha, Which?
Director of Policy and Advocacy, emphasized,
Fraud takes a serious toll on victims' stress levels and mental health as well as their finances, and many were left too ashamed to tell the people closest to them.
The consumer group's findings serve as a powerful reminder that the fight against fraud extends beyond financial protection to safeguarding the mental and emotional well-being of countless individuals.
