Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently shared high praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, labeling him a “great leader” and a “tough cookie” who has demonstrated exceptional leadership over more than 12 years. In an interview, Mr. Trump placed Mr. Modi alongside China’s President Xi Jinping, identifying them as the two global leaders he most admires for their power, leverage, and ability to execute.
Mr. Trump highlighted India’s immense scale, noting its 1.5 billion population, making it “actually the biggest.” He commended PM Modi for “staying out of wars,” calling it a smart approach. His admiration for Modi’s leadership was clear as he stated, “Modi’s a great leader.”
Discussing the economic relationship between the U.S. and India, Mr. Trump asserted that while India previously “used to really rip us off,” the two nations now conduct “fair business.” He attributed past imbalances to “stupid politicians” in the U.S. and acknowledged that India might not be as “happy about it because they used to do a lot better,” but maintained that the current trade relationship is more equitable.
The former President also recalled meeting Mr. Modi on the sidelines of a G7 Summit in France. This meeting, he indicated, was an effort to mend and strengthen the relationship between the two countries, which had experienced strains in the preceding year. Trump revealed that through these interactions, he gained a deeper understanding of the “real Modi,” describing him as “highly respected” and a “very tough cookie.”
Beyond Modi, Mr. Trump also lauded Chinese President Xi Jinping, admiring his “great stature and confidence.” He humorously remarked that if a movie were to be made about either leader, Hollywood would struggle to find an actor capable of portraying their unique presence.
