Modi to Sign LPG, Oil Reserve Pacts During UAE Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s UAE stop on May 15 will kick off a six-day, five-nation tour aimed at bolstering energy security and regional cooperation. In Abu Dhabi, officials say the talks will crystallize two key pacts: a strategic collaboration on liquefied petroleum gas supplies between IndianOil Corporation and ADNOC, and a separate agreement between the Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited and ADNOC on strategic petroleum reserves. The negotiations come as India seeks to diversify energy sources amid global volatility and as the Strait of Hormuz disruptions intensify the push for secure imports.
The oil-and-gas pacts would build on existing ties, with ADNOC already having a storage arrangement with ISPRL to hold more than five million barrels of crude at a facility in Mangalore. UAE has been a major energy partner, accounting for about 11% of India’s crude imports in 2025 and standing as one of the largest LNG suppliers to India. Modi’s discussions with UAE leadership during a brief stopover in Abu Dhabi are expected to cover both energy cooperation and the welfare of the roughly 4.5 million Indians living in the Emirates.
The Modi visit is the first leg of a five-nation tour that will also take him to the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy, with energy collaboration and technology sharing among the top agenda items. Beyond gas and oil storage, officials say the talks will touch on broader economic ties and regional stability as both nations seek resilient energy links amid a shifting global market.
