IMD warns of more cold wave days across north India this winter

The India Meteorological Department says this winter could bring more cold wave days than usual across several northern and central regions, including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, eastern Uttar Pradesh, northern Madhya Pradesh, western Maharashtra and Arunachal Pradesh. A cold wave day is declared when the minimum temperature is 10°C or less in the plains, and 0°C or less in hilly regions. If temperatures dip 4.5°C to 6.4°C below what’s normal for a region, that also counts as a cold wave day. The upcoming December to February period is forecast to feature normal to below-normal minimum temperatures across most parts of central India, adjoining peninsular India, and northwest India, with above-normal minimums likely in the remaining regions.

Cold wave occurrences are expected to be above normal over parts of central, northwest, and northeast India during the season. The winter weather picture is shaped by fewer western disturbances—rain-bearing storms that originate in the Mediterranean region—reducing the warming effect of moisture on nighttime lows. This year is also a La Niña year, which historically correlates with cooler spells, though there is no direct cause-and-effect. An earlier onset of cold air was noted in November, linked to a polar vortex that occasionally slips southwards.

Looking ahead, December to February may see a mix of normal and below-normal minimum temperatures in many areas, with several zones experiencing more frequent cold wave days than the long-term average. The overall pattern suggests a chillier-than-usual winter in large parts of central, northwest, and northeast India, while some southern and eastern pockets may see relatively milder conditions. Residents are advised to stay updated on official advisories and take precautions for prolonged cold spells.
