UN Warns: 'Supersized' El Nino Threatens Global Extreme Weather Until 2027!

A “supersized” El Nino event is rapidly intensifying, threatening to unleash a cascade of extreme weather events across the globe, including floods, droughts, and extreme heat, well into 2027. This alarming forecast comes from experts who warn that the planet is entering “uncharted waters.” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “El Nino is being supersized before our eyes.” He underscored that scientific data leaves no room for doubt: sea surface temperatures are soaring, global temperatures continue to climb, and the world is squarely in the danger zone of extreme weather phenomena.

Guterres stressed the urgency, noting,

The race now is between rising risks and our commitment to take climate action and protect people. We must win that race.

Forecasts from the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) extensive global network of climate centers indicate a near 100 percent probability that this El Nino will persist through February 2027.

This marks the first time a WMO El Nino update has been delivered with such unequivocal certainty, reflecting a strong consensus among its forecasting bodies. Celeste Saulo, the WMO's secretary-general, highlighted that the scale of the required response must match the immense scale of the event itself. “This exceptional El Nino demands exceptional preparation and response,” she declared.

Saulo noted that in the WMO's 50-year history, there has never been such a major mobilization with National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, who are on the front lines of delivering crucial forecasts and services to safeguard lives and livelihoods. While “El Nino” translates to “boy child,” its potential impact is far from benign, capable of delivering a massive blow to communities and economies worldwide.

Disruptions and devastations from ongoing droughts and floods are already being observed, and these impacts are expected to escalate as El Nino strengthens.
