Move or Leave: Amazon’s 30-Day Deadline Sparks Layoff Concerns
Move or Leave: Amazon’s 30-Day Deadline Sparks Layoff Concerns
Amazon orders U.S. employees to relocate to key hubs in 30 days or risk losing their roles without severance, news that intensifies layoff fears amid rising AI adoption.
According to Bloomberg, Amazon is ordering thousands of corporate workers to relocate to major cities such as Seattle, Arlington, and Washington, D.C. This will cause disruptions for workers who are already dealing with job insecurity and workforce reductions due to artificial intelligence.

According to the report, the relocation mandate affects workers from various teams; some are required to relocate across the nation to be near their managers. According to people familiar with the matter, employees are being informed not through company-wide announcements but through individual meetings and town halls.
"We hear from the majority of our teammates that they love the energy from being located together, and whenever someone chooses to or is asked to relocate, we work with them to offer support based on their individual circumstances," an Amazon spokesperson said.

No Move, No Severance
Workers say they were only given 30 days to make up their minds about moving, and then 60 days to either quit or start the relocation process. Severance packages will not be given to those who decide to quit rather than relocate, which will put additional financial strain on an already challenging choice.
Given Amazon's continuous cost-cutting measures and recent warning about AI-related job losses, mid-career professionals with established partners and school-age children are especially hesitant to uproot their lives.

"For more than a year now, some teams have been working to bring their teammates closer together to help them be as effective as possible, but there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach, and there hasn't been a change in our approach as a company," the spokesperson added.
Amazon Tightens In-Office Rules
The action is a step up from Amazon's previous return-to-office policy, which permitted flexibility in office location but required five days of in-person work. In the past, the business had satellite offices in major cities like Dallas, Austin, Los Angeles, Boston, and New York.

CEO Andy Jassy Warns of Layoffs
The timing is in line with Jassy's recent declaration that Amazon's corporate workforce will be reduced in the upcoming years due to artificial intelligence. According to the CEO, the organization will "need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs."

Jassy has advised staff members to "be curious about AI, educate yourself, attend workshops and take trainings, use and experiment with AI whenever you can" to help them adjust to the changing environment.
Amazon may be able to reduce headcount without having to implement layoffs and pay severance benefits if the relocation mandate encourages voluntary departures. Since 2022, Amazon has already cut 27,000 employees through several rounds of corporate layoffs.
Final Touch
The clock is ticking if you work for Amazon as a corporate employee and are based outside of Seattle, D.C., or Arlington. At a time when AI-driven workforce reductions are imminent, you must deal with a pressing deadline, logistical chaos, and personal turmoil. Opportunities still exist for those who are prepared to relocate. The consequences are dire for those who don't. It's also another indication that AI-driven reorganization is gaining traction in the labor market at large.
Best of Luck
