Parliament Clears Amaravati as Andhra's Sole Capital
A new amendment bill clears Amaravati as Andhra Pradesh’s sole capital, ending years of debate on Hyderabad and the state’s capital future.
The Lok Sabha passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, to recognise Amaravati as the sole capital of the state with support from both treasury and opposition benches. After becoming law, Amaravati will be the only and permanent capital with effect from June 2, 2024, according to the bill provisions. The bill was passed through a voice vote, and while the ruling party secured support, the opposition YSR Congress Party staged a walkout in protest during the passage.
This moves marks a culmination of a long-running political dream linked to former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who had pushed to establish Amaravati as the capital through a major land-pooling project spanning thousands of acres. The development comes in the context of the 2014 reorganisation act, which had designated Hyderabad as the common capital for both states for up to 10 years, after which Telangana would keep Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh would get a new capital. The amendment clarifies the status but notes that the law did not explicitly name the future capital for Andhra Pradesh.
Supporters argue that formalising Amaravati as the permanent capital will bring political stability, spur investment, and help coordinate governance and development projects that have faced delays amid the capital dispute. Critics, while acknowledging the need for clarity, continue to scrutinise the long-term plans, investment implications, and how the designation will affect regional dynamics, particularly around land ownership and local development.
With the bill now enshrined in law, officials say the state can move forward with governance arrangements and infrastructure planning, reducing the likelihood of new bids to alter the capital decision in the future. The decision is presented as a milestone for Andhra Pradesh’s governance and a turning point in its post-division trajectory.
