The Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) is currently grappling with a significant leadership crisis following the resignation of its 17-member executive committee, led by its first woman president, Shwetha Menon, on Sunday, June 21, 2026. This development has sparked calls for profound change within the influential film body.
Actor Ansiba Hassan, who herself resigned from the joint secretary post in February 2026 citing character assassination and communal remarks against her by certain members, has strongly advocated for a new leadership. She believes the association needs leaders with genuine conviction and empathy. Ms. Hassan expressed a sense of vindication, stating that the general body meeting’s decision to accept the committee's resignation showed that her earlier concerns about the previous leadership were valid.
Ms. Hassan explicitly named prominent actors such as Kunchacko Boban, Prithviraj, Asif Ali, and Dhyan Sreenivasan as ideal candidates to lead AMMA. She stressed the importance of having a leadership that is truly capable of listening to its members' issues with compassion. A crucial part of her vision for the new committee is to actively work towards bringing back actors, including the survivor in the 2017 actress assault case, along with others like Rima Kallingal, Remya Nambeesan, and Parvathy Thiruvothu, who had previously resigned from AMMA. These actors had left the association, alleging that its leadership stood with the accused rather than the victim.
Further adding to the turmoil are allegations of financial irregularities. Ms. Hassan claimed that the outgoing executive committee failed to provide a clear and satisfactory explanation regarding financial gaps and expenditure statements to the general body meeting. This lack of transparency has fueled concerns about the association's internal governance.
Echoing the sentiments of disarray, Shwetha Menon herself commented on the situation, stating, "I have come out of AMMA today; like some women had earlier said, I also feel like there was an attempt by some accused people to hijack it." This statement from the former president underscores the deep internal rifts within the organization. In the interim, Ramesh Pisharody has been appointed to head an ad-hoc panel to manage the association's affairs.
The crisis marks a critical juncture for AMMA, with many hoping that the change in leadership will pave the way for greater accountability, transparency, and a more empathetic approach towards its members' welfare and concerns.
