Golf fans are buzzing as world number two Rory McIlroy delivered a stunning return to form, carding an impressive six-under-par opening round at the BMW Championship in St Louis. This stellar performance puts him in a share of the lead and marks a dramatic turnaround after a disappointing eight-over finish at last week's St Jude Championship.
McIlroy had openly admitted that even a positive display at Bellerive Country Club would "feel like a win" after his recent string of uninspiring performances, including a 40th-place tie at The Open. His strong start at the BMW Championship, where rival Scottie Scheffler made a poor start, comes as a welcome relief to the golfer and his supporters.
The Northern Irishman showcased his renewed touch with birdies on the fourth and eighth holes to turn at two under. He continued his momentum on the back nine, executing a fine tee shot on the par-three 13th to set up a seven-foot putt and gaining another shot after a lengthy drive on the 492-yard 15th. McIlroy then capped off his round with successive birdies, signing for an excellent 64.
Speaking after his round, McIlroy credited "good work" with his swing coach Michael Bannon and caddie Harry Diamond for helping him rediscover his form. He also noted that the Bellerive course suits his game better than the one in Memphis, offering wider playing corridors that allowed him to recover from a couple of wayward shots.
