Forget the Perfect Score: How I Got Into Harvard Without a 1600

Okay, so Harvard brought back the SAT. And everyone is freaking out thinking you need a perfect score to even have a chance. I get it, the pressure is real. But let me tell you something important: I got into Harvard, and my SAT score was not a 1600. It was not even a 1550. My score was totally good but it was not perfect, and I'm here to tell you why that actually might be okay for you too.
The biggest mistake students make right now is thinking Harvard only wants perfect test takers. That is the old way of thinking. For the Class of 2029 and beyond, Harvard is looking at scores in a much more human way. They know a test score does not tell your whole story. Think of your SAT or ACT score as just one piece of a very big puzzle. It is important, sure, but it is not the only thing.
What really matters is context. Did you get a 1450 from a school that barely offers AP classes and you had to study for the SAT on your own? Or did you get a 1580 from a fancy prep school with a full time SAT tutor? Harvard sees all of that. A 1450 from a challenging background can actually look more impressive than a 1580 from a super privileged one. They call this "predictive validity" and it basically means they are trying to figure out if you can handle the academic rigor at Harvard, not just if you can ace a multiple choice test.
So, what should you do? First, take the test seriously and aim for your best score. But do not let it define you. Focus on showing Harvard who you are outside of a number. Are you passionate about something? Do you have unique experiences? Are you a good person? Your essays, your extracurriculars, and those short answer questions about your roommate and intellectual disagreements are all chances to shine. Those parts of your application might actually be telling Harvard more about your potential than your test score ever could. You really can get in without a perfect score, I am living proof.
