Omar Abdullah Dares BJP: Bring UCC Bill to Parliament, Not Via States!

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recently issued a direct challenge to the BJP, questioning their strategy to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He urged the party to bring the UCC Bill directly to Parliament for legislation, rather than pushing it through BJP-ruled States, calling the current approach a “back-door entry”.

Mr. Abdullah emphasized that if the BJP truly has the numbers to pass such a significant bill, they should do so transparently in Parliament.

The government should not take the backdoor route and should instead bring the Bill before the Parliament. If you have numbers, bring it to the Parliament. Why are you doing this through different States?

he asked.

He also pointed out that several allies within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are not in favor of the UCC, specifically naming the Janata Dal United [JD(U)] as one of the parties opposing its implementation in Bihar.

He argued that a measure of this nature cannot be considered truly universal if it is implemented only in states governed by the BJP. “The whole country is not a BJP-ruled State. There are a number of States and territories that the BJP does not rule. Therefore, if you apply it only to BJP States, it's not universal,” Mr.

Abdullah stated, stressing that such an issue demands a national-level discussion and resolution through Parliament.

Abdullah also commented on other critical national matters.

He welcomed the de-escalation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), calling it a positive step, especially for those living in the border regions. “Anything that reduces tension on the Line of Control or the Line of Actual Control is a good step.

Particularly for those people who live close to it,” he remarked, expressing hope for similar improvements along the Line of Control (LoC).

Regarding India's foreign policy, Mr. Abdullah asserted that New Delhi's approach has always been independent and there is no need for validation from other countries, including China. He cautioned against giving too much importance to external comments, whether positive or negative, to avoid being constrained in future diplomatic stances.

He further highlighted the BRICS summit's condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack as a significant success for India's foreign policy, especially given the presence of Pakistan's allies at the summit.
