Charli XCX stars in The Moment, a mockumentary inspired by her life and tour, premiering at Sundance and hinting at a volatile-but-nice side she embraces.
Charli XCX brings a new chapter to Sundance with The Moment, a mockumentary starring the pop icon that leans on her real-life tour and the Brat era for its inspiration. The film follows a fictionalized version of Charli mounting a bold, globe-spanning tour, mixing documentary-style scenes with performative moments that blur the line between self-penned myth and reality.
Onstage at the premiere, Charli explained that she felt a lot of overlap with her character and drew on personal experiences to shape the film. “I’m obviously quite related to my character, so I had a lot of inspiration to pull from,” she said, adding that she hopes fans see both the volatile and the kindly sides of the artist. The moment when she laughs off the more chaotic moments and acknowledges she can be “quite nice too” drew a light-hearted, approving response from the audience.
The Moment also stars Rosanna Arquette, Kate Berlant, Hailey Gates and Alexander Skarsgård, with A24 handling the theatrical release on January 30. Zamiri, who directed and co-wrote the project, has created a satirical, straight-faced look at fame that some critics feel lands more as a straight portrayal than sharp satire, while others praise its candid, larger-than-life energy.
The Sundance reception underscored Charli XCX’s growing ability to crossover from music into cinema, using her star persona to frame a story about art, ambition and the chaos that accompanies it. As The Moment heads to theaters, audiences will decide how this hybrid mockumentary lands with general moviegoers.
