US Intensifies Pressure: New Sanctions Hit Iran's Airlines Amid Escalating Tensions

The United States Department of the Treasury has taken a significant step by placing 27 Iranian airlines on its Specially Designated Nationals List.

This move effectively targets nearly every commercial carrier remaining in Iran, marking an intensified pressure campaign against Tehran.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, the department asserted that “Iran's commercial airlines have long supported the Iranian regime's destabilising activities.” It further detailed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has routinely exploited ostensibly private airlines to acquire and transport weapons, as well as to ferry personnel. The US had previously sanctioned the Iranian carrier Mahan Air in October 2011, and more recently targeted several companies acting as its general sales agents on July 30.

These latest punitive measures also aim at

covert front companies, foreign intermediaries, and deceptive transhipment routes that Iran relies on to obtain U.S.-origin aircraft and sensitive technology,

according to the Treasury release. This escalation in sanctions occurs amidst rising tensions in West Asia. Iranian media reported that a US missile struck an Iranian tanker off Kharg Island.

In response, the chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Ali Abdollahi, issued a stern warning earlier on Tuesday, stating that Tehran would attack US bases in the region if Iranian oil tankers were targeted.
