Anthropic’s Claude AI chatbot has gone offline across regions after a massive spike in user traffic, a surge that pushed the bot to No. 1 on Apple’s US App Store over the weekend. Thousands of users reported issues with Claude’s web platform, mobile app, and API tools on Tuesday, effectively halting work for many.
Outage trackers logged thousands of complaints in a short window. Downdetector recorded over 3,500 issues, with users in the US, India, and Europe unable to send prompts or receive responses. The company acknowledged the disruption on its status page and said engineers were investigating elevated errors across claude.ai, cowork, platform, and claude code.
This outage comes amid a period of rapid growth for Claude. Anthropic said free users rose by more than 60% since January, daily sign-ups tripled since November, and paid subscriptions more than doubled in 2026, stretching the platform’s infrastructure.
The incident also unfolds against a backdrop of political controversy in the US surrounding Anthropic’s AI models, with recent moves in Washington to limit federal use and public scrutiny of the company’s stance on mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. Executives have faced heat even as users and developers rely on Claude for work.
With engineering teams racing to restore full access, users await a timeline for fixes as the company works to scale its services and prevent a repeat of the outage.
