Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Hyderabad between the evening of Monday, July 20, 2026, and the early hours of Tuesday, July 21, 2026. This much-anticipated downpour brought down temperatures, offering significant relief from the prevailing warm and humid conditions that had gripped the city. While heavy rains dominated the night, light showers continued in a few parts of Hyderabad on Tuesday afternoon, though these were localised and of low intensity.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had previously issued a weather forecast on July 20, predicting light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places in Hyderabad and its surrounding areas for July 21. The forecast also indicated generally cloudy skies over the city, which proved accurate. However, the intensity of the rain on Monday evening caught many commuters off guard, particularly around areas like JNTU, leading to disruptions.
Data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) revealed specific rainfall figures for Hyderabad. Shamshabad recorded the highest rainfall within the city limits at 3.4 cm, followed closely by Mamidipalli and Kongarkalan, both receiving 3 cm. Other notable measurements included 2.3 cm in Banjara Hills, 2.2 cm in Hafeezpet, 2.1 cm in Madhapur, 2 cm in West Maredpally, and 1.9 cm in Miyapur and Chandanagar.
Beyond the capital, several other districts across Telangana also experienced intense showers during the same period. Kotapally in Mancherial district registered the highest rainfall in the state, with a staggering 12.4 cm. Other areas in Mancherial also saw significant precipitation, including Jankapur (12.3 cm), Tandur (12 cm), and Devulawada (11.3 cm). Kamanpur in Peddapalli recorded 10.9 cm, Venkatapur in Mulugu received 10.4 cm, and Peddampet in Jayashankar Bhupalplly measured 9.6 cm. Looking ahead, the IMD has also forecasted thunderstorms for 11 Telangana districts on July 22, along with strong surface winds expected in isolated pockets across the remaining districts.
