Matthew Rhys Makes Emmy History with Double Lead Wins! 🏆🎬

Hollywood is buzzing after Welsh actor Matthew Rhys achieved a historic feat at the 2026 Emmy Awards, becoming the first person ever to win two lead acting prizes in a single night. Rhys, 51, took home the award for best lead actor in a limited series for the psychological thriller "The Beast In Me," and also secured best lead actor in a comedy for his role in "Widow's Bay."

Reacting to his monumental double win, Rhys described the experience as a "complete out of the body experience" that still feels as "surreal as it was last night." He candidly shared feeling "abject terror" while accepting his awards in a room filled with his heroes, including screen legend Gary Oldman. Interestingly, Rhys admitted he was too intimidated to tell Harrison Ford that he would be voicing Han Solo for the first Welsh-dubbed version of "Star Wars."

Rhys's path to stardom wasn't always smooth.

Early in his career, after starring alongside Kathleen Turner in the West End production of "The Graduate" in 2000, he struggled to find work for nearly two years. So desperate, he even considered joining the British Army, only to receive a rejection letter, a moment he recalls thinking, "oh my God, I can't even join the Army."

Upon moving to Hollywood in 2006, Rhys surrounded himself with fellow Welsh talent, forming what he affectionately called the "LA Tafia." He lived with Michael Sheen and his school friend Ioan Gruffudd, both of whom he attended Ysgol Glantaf in Cardiff with. The trio would often speak Welsh, dream of authentic fish and chips, and watch rugby together, creating a little piece of Wales in Los Angeles.

His personal life also found its way into the spotlight.

Rhys met his partner, actress Keri Russell, at a kickball game in Los Angeles in 2002.

A memorable (or perhaps unmemorable for him) drunken voicemail he left on her machine didn't initially charm her, and she didn't return his call.

A decade later, fate intervened when they co-starred as Russian spies in the critically acclaimed TV series "The Americans" from 2013-2018, where their on-screen chemistry blossomed into a real-life romance. The couple welcomed their son, Sam, in 2016, and Rhys is dedicated to teaching him Welsh, joking he plans to "force" Sam to embrace his heritage. He is also a stepdad to Russell's children, River and Willa.

Adding a quirky detail to his life, Rhys owns a 1939 wooden cruiser boat named "Rarebit," a nod to the famous Welsh dish. From almost joining the army to making Emmy history, Matthew Rhys's journey is truly one for the books, highlighting perseverance, talent, and a deep connection to his Welsh roots.
