Trump Names Jared Isaacman as NASA Chief Amid 3I/ATLAS Buzz and Moon Mission Plans
NASA's Artemis program aims to return humans to the Moon, but delays, private partners, and a fast-moving global race—China's lunar push—shape the next chapter of space exploration.
With its lunar program Artemis, the U.S. space program is poised to create history once more. NASA intends to deliver new pairs of boots to Earth's only natural satellite since the historic Apollo 11 mission in July 1969, but they are already behind schedule. A new threat is breathing down the neck of the eagle, a dragon whose time has (likely) come, but the Soviets were left behind! NASA is working through the night to return to the Moon as China accelerates its lunar mission. Its private partner, SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, has been preparing Starship for a few years now with varying degrees of success.
Due to the delay, Musk eventually resigned as NASA's interim administrator after Sean Duffy announced a bid to reopen the contracts for additional private players. In his most recent announcement, President Trump nominated Jared Isaacman, a billionaire businessman and private astronaut, to head the space agency. He said,
Sean Duffy has done an incredible job as Interim Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).This evening, I am pleased to nominate Jared Isaacman, an accomplished business leader, philanthropist, pilot, and astronaut, as Administrator of NASA. Jared's passion for space, astronaut experience, and dedication to pushing the boundaries of exploration, unlocking the mysteries of the universe, and advancing the new space economy, make him ideally suited to lead NASA into a bold new era.
Isaacman wrote in a lengthy tweet in response to the post,
Thank you, Mr. President @POTUS, for this opportunity. It will be an honor to serve my country under your leadership. I am also very grateful to @SecDuffy, who skillfully oversees @NASA alongside his many other responsibilities.
The support from the space-loving community has been overwhelming. I am not sure how I earned the trust of so many, but I will do everything I can to live up to those expectations.
To the innovators building the orbital economy, to the scientists pursuing breakthrough discoveries and to dreamers across the world eager for a return to the Moon and the grand journey beyond—these are the most exciting times since the dawn of the space age-- and I truly believe the future we have all been waiting for will soon become reality.
And to the best and brightest at NASA, and to all the commercial and international partners, we have an extraordinary responsibility—but the clock is running. The journey is never easy, but it is time to inspire the world once again to achieve the near-impossible—to undertake and accomplish big, bold endeavors in space...and when we do, we will make life better here at home and challenge the next generation to go even further.
Duffy, meanwhile, congratulated Isaacman and thanked Trump. He also restated his position on the space race,
Elon Musk, who had a long history with Isaacman, tweeted his heartfelt support for him.
The founder and executive chairman of Shift4, Jared Isaacman, served as the commander of SpaceX's Inspiration4, the first all-civilian space mission. His two speed-around-the-world flights in 2008 and 2009, which raised money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation, are among his many world records. In order to train pilots for the US, British, and NATO air forces, he also founded Draken International in 2011. Jared became the first private citizen to conduct a spacewalk in September 2024 while leading SpaceX's Polaris Dawn mission.
