Goa Police on Tuesday identified the driver as Shaurya Goyal, 19, a resident of Hauz Khas in Delhi. The Mahindra Thar, GA-03-V-5695, was travelling from Mapusa to Anjuna when it allegedly sped through a junction, lost control, and slammed into a Hyundai i-20, GA-08-AB-6685. Bhagat Ram Sharma, 65, a resident of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, was declared dead at District Hospital, Mapusa. Police said the driver was not under the influence of alcohol, with a medical examination returning negative for intoxicants.
An eyewitness at the scene described a contested sequence: initially, a woman was seen driving the Thar before reportedly swapping seats with Goyal. Local resident Myron Fernandes told reporters that the Thar appeared to be speeding and that he helped pull the injured from the hatchback.
Authorities said the driver has been booked for causing death by negligence and other relevant sections of the law. He was arrested on Tuesday and later released on bail as the investigation continues, including checks of vehicle documents and examination of any available dashcam footage.
Residents and police are calling for renewed attention to road safety on Goa's busy routes between Mapusa and Anjuna, with officials stressing the importance of responsible driving and stricter enforcement to prevent such tragedies in the future.
