Southern Europe is in the throes of a severe heatwave, with Spain bracing for its third brutal heatwave of the summer. The country's meteorological agency, AEMET, has issued an "extraordinary danger" warning as temperatures are forecast to soar up to a scorching 44 degrees Celsius on Thursday. This comes perilously close to Spain's all-time record of 47.6C, set just five years ago. Popular tourist destinations like Malaga, Valencia, and Alicante could see temperatures hit a sweltering 42C, impacting holidaymakers and locals alike.
The extreme weather isn't limited to Spain. France and Italy are also grappling with intense heat and devastating wildfires. In southwestern France, over 10,000 people have been evacuated from areas near Bordeaux due to raging blazes. Dramatic footage from Italy shows huge fires consuming parts of Sicily and Sardinia, disrupting summer holidays. This surge in temperatures follows previous heatwaves in June that reportedly led to 14,000 more deaths across Europe than typically expected for that time of year, according to the EuroMOMO mortality monitoring hub.
Further east, Greece is experiencing temperatures topping 41C, leading authorities to ban outdoor work during peak midday sun. Cyprus has implemented similar restrictions for afternoon hours. North Macedonia's capital, Skopje, recently saw 11 people hospitalized after a powerful storm, which also caused widespread power outages, felled trees, and damaged roofs. Kosovo is also on alert for more storms and potential lightning strikes. The continent is clearly under immense environmental stress, prompting urgent public safety measures and raising concerns about the long-term impact of such extreme weather events.
