India signs ₹4,666-cr deals for advanced carbines and torpedoes
Defence Ministry inks ₹4,666 crore contracts to modernize army carbines and navy torpedoes, boosting national security and Make-in-India ambitions.
The defence ministry on Tuesday signed two contracts worth ₹4,666 crore to equip the army and navy with state-of-the-art close-quarter battle carbines and heavyweight torpedoes, a move tied to broader modernisation plans for 2025-26. The carbines—over 4.25 lakh units valued at ₹2,770 crore—will be supplied by Bharat Forge Ltd and Adani Group’s PLR Systems Pvt Ltd, in a 60:40 bid split. This marks a significant upgrade from decades-old submachine guns based on a 1940s design and underscores the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliant India, push to indigenise defence production. The deliveries are slated to begin in a year, signaling a swift ramp-up in infantry capabilities and compatibility with private sector participation.
