Delhi MCD Bypolls Open with 5.4% Early Turnout in Three-Way Fight

Polls opened at 7:30 a.m. across 580 booths in 12 vacant MCD wards as Delhi prepares for its first direct electoral battle among the BJP, AAP and Congress since the February assembly elections. By 9:30 a.m., early turnout stood at 5.40%. The election, conducted under the Delhi State Election Commission, involved 2,320 Election Commission personnel and aims to fill 12 civic wards after months of political drama in the capital.

To ease voting, city authorities arranged metro services to start as early as 4 a.m., with the Delhi Transport Corporation running special buses from 3 a.m. ahead of the voting window on Sunday and again on December 3, when counting will take place. Security has been heightened with 2,265 personnel deployed, plus 580 Home Guards and 13 companies of Central Armed Police Forces, reflecting the high stakes of this three-way contest.

The wards voting today include Mundka (General), Shalimar Bagh-B (Women), Ashok Vihar (Women), Chandni Chowk (General), Chandni Mahal (General), Dwarka-B (Women), Dichaon Kalan (Women), Naraina (General), Sangam Vihar-A (General), Dakshin Puri (SC), Greater Kailash (Women) and Vinod Nagar (General). In the lead-up to polls, voters urged neighbors to participate for the common good and to choose leaders who can advance society, families, and the broader city’s interests.

Security drones were planned to monitor three booths marked as ‘critical,’ and officials emphasized smooth, transparent voting to reflect the public mood across wards. This bypoll is closely watched as a barometer of political momentum after the February assembly results, and it will set the tone for city governance ahead of upcoming municipal decisions. Counting on December 3 will determine the winner of these 12 wards and possibly reshape the local political landscape.
