NS Raja Subramani named CDS; Swaminathan to head Navy

The government on Saturday named Lieutenant General (retired) NS Raja Subramani as the country’s next Chief of Defence Staff, and Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as the new Navy Chief. Subramani will take over as CDS on May 30, replacing General Anil Chauhan, while Swaminathan will assume charge on May 31, succeeding Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi. Subramani, who retired as Vice Chief of Army Staff and is currently serving as military adviser to the National Security Council Secretariat, is described as someone with deep operational insight across both western and northern borders.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Subramani was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985. Over a 39-year career, he served as Central Army Commander in Lucknow and held senior roles on the NSAB staff. He studied at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in Bracknell, the National Defence College in New Delhi, and earned a Master of Arts from King’s College London and an MPhil in Defence Studies from Madras University.

Swaminathan, who has been heading the Western Naval Command in Mumbai, is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla; the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham, United Kingdom; the College of Naval Warfare, Karanja. His appointment completes the leadership trio at a time when the government is pursuing major defence reforms, including theatreisation, that reshape command structures across services. The government had extended General Chauhan’s tenure by eight months last September.

The appointments mark a pivotal moment in India’s defence leadership as new chiefs take charge at the end of May, aligning with the ongoing reform agenda and the readiness of the armed forces to implement theatre-based command realignments.
