A devastating ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing unit in Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, has claimed the lives of seven migrant workers and left dozens hospitalized. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday at the St Peter's Paul Seafoods Exports facility in Kannigaipair, near Periyapalayam.
The Chief Minister, C. Joseph Vijay, has promptly instructed the formation of an enquiry committee to thoroughly probe the incident. Additionally, he announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased, acknowledging the profound loss. Medical treatment for those affected is also being ensured.
Leaders from various political parties, including AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, BJP State unit president Nainar Nagenthran, and AMMK founder T.T.V. Dhinakaran, have expressed their shock and extended condolences. They have collectively urged the Tamil Nadu government to take immediate action. Their primary demand is for stringent adherence to safety guidelines in all industrial units and regular, thorough inspections to prevent such catastrophes in the future. They also emphasized the need for proper medical care for the injured.
