Meghalaya is currently facing an "existential crisis" with an alarming 80% rainfall deficiency recorded in June, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma warned. This dire situation is compounded by the looming threat of El Niño, prompting urgent calls for action across the state.
Speaking at a workshop titled 'Developing State Response for El Niño Preparedness: Strengthening Food and Water Security' in Shillong, CM Sangma emphasized the immediate reality of climate change. "Climate change is no longer a future challenge; it is our present reality. While forecasts may change, preparedness cannot wait," he stated, highlighting the critical need for proactive measures.
He urged the strengthening of resilience through sustainable solutions, including natural farming, robust water conservation efforts, spring rejuvenation, and community-led initiatives. Sangma noted that Meghalaya's natural farming endeavors have already garnered national recognition, and the state is committed to developing innovative solutions tailored to its unique geographical landscape.
Collaboration is key, according to the Chief Minister, who stressed that working together across government departments, local communities, and various institutions is essential to build a more resilient Meghalaya for future generations. He called upon officials to adopt flexible and adaptive strategies, grounded in data and local realities, to minimize potential impacts.
"We cannot wait for perfect plans. We must act now. Every step we take today will shape the resilience of future generations," Sangma asserted. He reiterated that natural farming offers a practical and sustainable path to mitigate climate change effects, provided practices are innovated and adapted to Meghalaya's specific conditions. Other crucial strategies mentioned include integrating comprehensive water conservation, revitalizing natural springs, and constructing water retention structures like check dams and reservoirs to secure the state's future.
