Trump's $5,000 'Dividends' Come With a Catch: Spend ONLY in the US!
Former President Trump proposes $5,000 'Trump Dividends' for every US adult, but recipients must spend the money domestically. Find out why this controversial plan is sparking intense debate!
Former President Donald Trump has unveiled a highly-anticipated proposal: a $5,000 "Trump dividend" for every adult U.S. citizen, contingent on Republicans retaining control of Congress in the upcoming November midterms. However, this eye-catching offer comes with a significant condition: the money must be spent exclusively within the United States.
Trump announced the plan during a keynote address at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday. He explicitly stated that recipients would be barred from spending the funds abroad.
"We don't want you going to Canada to spend the money," he told the enthusiastic crowd.
"We don't want you going to China, to Germany." He reiterated this stance in a subsequent interview, emphasizing the goal of keeping the money circulating within the American economy.
The proposal has immediately drawn a wave of skepticism and questions. Critics are particularly concerned about its legality, the immense potential cost, and whether such payments could even be authorized by a president without congressional approval. Some have characterized it as an unprecedented attempt to sway voters ahead of crucial midterm elections.
Sarah Smith, the BBC’s North America editor, raised legal concerns, suggesting the pledge could potentially violate federal law. She noted,
It's not clear that it's legal to make a promise like that because it is against the law to try and offer a payment to anybody to influence how they're going to vote.
When asked by Fox News' Laura Ingraham why he wouldn't send out checks immediately, Trump offered an inscrutable response, claiming Democrats couldn't achieve such growth while his administration could.
Experts also point out that any broad federal payment program, similar to the pandemic-era stimulus checks, would typically require authorization from Congress, which holds the power of the purse regarding federal spending. The debate over the feasibility and implications of this ambitious proposal is just beginning.
