Five young people died in a two-vehicle crash on a Saturday night near Dundalk, County Louth. The occupants of a Volkswagen Golf, three men and two women, were all in their early 20s and died at the scene. A male occupant in the Golf was removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The occupants of the second vehicle, a man and a woman, were also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Gardaí say they are investigating all the circumstances of the collision, which occurred just after 9pm when the two vehicles collided. Supt Charlie Armstrong described the event as a shocking, devastating one for the families, their communities and Dundalk, and said investigators are appealing for witnesses and any dashcam footage from the area at the time.
Tributes are expected to be paid to first responders and to the wider community as the investigation continues. The incident has raised questions about road safety on weekend evenings, underscoring the need for vigilance on Irish roads. County Louth Gardaí are assisting the investigation, and members of the public with information are urged to contact them.
