India urges BRICS to push practical unity amid global turmoil
New Delhi calls for deeper BRICS cooperation to weather conflicts, energy shocks, and trade volatility, stressing dialogue and resilient supply chains.
New Delhi hosted the BRICS foreign ministers conclave as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar urged the bloc to pursue practical ways to navigate the fallout from global conflicts, economic volatility, and trade disruptions. The opening session was attended by ministers from Iran, Russia, Brazil and several other member states, underscoring the bloc's expanding lineup amid shifting global dynamics.
Jaishankar described a world in flux, where ongoing conflicts, economic uncertainties, and challenges in trade, technology and climate are shaping the international landscape. He said there is growing expectation from emerging markets and developing countries that BRICS will play a constructive and stabilising role to navigate these challenges, and that discussions should translate into concrete cooperation.
He noted that development issues remain central and that many countries face energy, food, fertiliser and health security challenges, as well as access to finance. He stressed that reliable supply chains and diversified markets are essential components of economic resilience, and urged BRICS to help member economies respond more effectively. In his view, peace and security remain central to the global order, and dialogue and diplomacy are critical to counter terrorism and maintain stability.
Jaishankar stressed the importance of practical steps over rhetoric, saying the time calls for measurable actions that can bolster energy security, trade facilitation, and technology collaboration among BRICS members. He also acknowledged that the bloc faces tests to unity given internal divisions and the presence of newer members, but argued that a focus on pragmatic cooperation could strengthen BRICS as a stabilising force amid volatility.
Analysts note that the bloc’s ability to deliver concrete outcomes could influence its influence on global energy markets and supply chains, especially as the West Asia crisis continues to affect prices and flow. The New Delhi gathering sets the stage for deeper discussions on how BRICS can coordinate to support resilient growth for its diverse members.
