BCCI Tightens IPL Security Over Honey-Trap Risks, New Rules

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a stern advisory to IPL franchises amid concerns about targeted compromise and honey-trapping, tightening hotel-room access, accreditation display, and overall security protocols. The move includes stricter rules governing unauthorised departures and interactions with players during matches, along with a strict vaping ban and severe penalties for violations. ahead of IPL 2026, the league is signaling zero tolerance for breaches of protocol.

As part of the new framework, players will travel in the team bus, and the entry of family members and friends into key areas is restricted. Family members must travel in separate vehicles and can only observe practice from the hospitality area. On practice days, only accredited staff will be allowed in the dressing room and on the field, while extended support staff (such as net bowlers and throw-down specialists) require a list submitted for BCCI approval; non-match day accreditations will be issued once approved. These measures aim to streamline access and reduce opportunities for unauthorised individuals to mingle with players.

Meanwhile, the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit has flagged the presence of unauthorised persons in IPL dugouts and on team buses, underscoring a broader push to clamp down on activities that could undermine the league’s integrity. Officials emphasised that owners and officials must adhere to protocols, and any dilution could invite stringent action from the BCCI and the IPL.

The security overhaul comes in response to ongoing concerns surrounding conduct around franchises and players, including reports of vaping incidents linked to a Royals player during IPL 2026. By tightening access controls, the league seeks to safeguard players, staff, and fans while maintaining competitive fairness as IPL 2026 approaches.
