LeCun: AI Is Power, Not Intelligence—India's Path to Scaled AI
AI can amplify human intelligence, not replace it, as leaders outline India's scalable, responsible AI path at the summit.
In a fresh dialogue at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, Yann LeCun argues that today’s artificial intelligence is powerful but not truly intelligent. He says AI will act as an amplifier of human intelligence rather than a replacement, likening its potential impact to the printing press. LeCun cautions against overhyping human-level AI and emphasizes the need for world models that understand the physical world. He also highlights India's role in AI’s future through education, talent, and democratized access to technology.
At the same summit, industry leaders stressed that AI’s future lies in industrial-scale deployment, not flashy demos. Martin Schroeter of Kyndryl outlined the shift from concept to widespread use, noting that many organizations struggle to realize returns from AI initiatives. The bottleneck, he said, is readiness, not innovation, as enterprises grapple with fragmented data, hybrid clouds, edge environments, and legacy systems. Building trust remains paramount as AI decisions increasingly support critical sectors like hospitals, banks, airports, and energy grids. India is positioned as a global proving ground, guided by Digital India, the India AI Mission, and a robust digital public infrastructure that enables responsible, inclusive scaling. Real-world examples include the Unified Lending Interface speeding up loans and proactive, self-healing operations at Bangalore Airport through agentic AI.
Rishad Premji, Executive Chairman of Wipro, echoed the call for scaled impact, arguing that India has a unique opportunity to lead AI adoption across education, healthcare, agriculture, and small commerce. He stressed that AI fluency must extend beyond engineers to teachers, nurses, administrators, and business owners. With practical deployment, context-aware models, and inclusive approaches, India can solve complex challenges at scale, delivering tangible benefits to citizens and the global community.
