Assam Bans Polygamy, Sets Up Victims' Compensation Fund
The Assam Cabinet approved The Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, imposing up to seven years in prison and creating a compensation fund for victims, with Sixth Schedule exemptions.
Guwahati, Nov 9, 2025: The Assam Cabinet has approved The Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, which aims to ban the practice with penalties including up to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for violators. The bill also retains possible exemptions for Sixth Schedule areas and will be tabled in the Assembly on November 25.
In a press conference after the Cabinet meeting at Lok Sewa Bhawan, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government will create a new fund to compensate the victims of polygamy so that they do not face hardship in continuing with their lives.
Sarma added that those convicted under the law could face up to seven years, and the exemptions for Sixth Schedule areas acknowledge tribal customs in those regions. The move is designed to tighten the legal framework around polygamy while ensuring financial support for affected wives, with lawmakers expected to discuss the Bill further when it is taken up in the Assembly.
