The world mourned the sudden passing of beloved "Jurassic Park" star Sam Neill earlier this week, and now his ex-partner, Australian journalist Laura Tingle, has shed light on the circumstances surrounding his death. Tingle revealed that while the 78-year-old actor was cancer-free, his extensive battle with the disease had severely compromised his immune system, ultimately taking a toll on his body.
Speaking on the radio show Sydney Mornings, Tingle, who was in a relationship with Neill from 2018 to 2021, explained that Neill had been fighting various forms of cancer "intensively" for at least five years. "He’d had a lot of chemo and a lot of immunotherapy and, thankfully, it had finally cleared him of the blood cancer that he’d had, but it left him pretty compromised in terms of his immune system and I think his poor body sort of got a bit exhausted, as makes sense," she stated. She added that Neill had been "pretty sick for the last couple of weeks," despite everyone "willing him on."
The actor was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer in 2022. While he had successfully overcome this challenge, Tingle's comments suggest that his body was too weakened to recover from subsequent ailments. Rima Te Wiata, who co-starred with Neill in Taika Waititi’s 2016 film "Hunt for the Wilderpeople," further clarified to The New Zealand Herald that Neill had contracted pneumonia. Te Wiata reportedly expressed the sentiment, "For goodness sake, I got over my cancer. And now look, now I get pneumonia. What next?" echoing the tragic irony of the situation.
Neill's family has confirmed that a private funeral service will be held in New Zealand. This decision honors his wish for seclusion and his deep connection to his homeland, with only close family and friends expected to attend this intimate gathering. The clarification from Tingle provides a more complete picture of the health struggles Neill faced in his final days, helping fans and loved ones understand the "sudden and unexpected" nature of his passing.
