The conflict in Eastern Europe continues to escalate as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian drones successfully struck an oil refinery in Russia's Tyumen region, located more than 2,000 km (1,200 miles) from Ukraine's border. This deep penetration into Russian territory marks a significant development in Ukraine's defensive capabilities.
Zelenskyy, in his nightly video address, lauded the effectiveness of special operations, specifically thanking the Ukrainian military for reaching the Tyumen Region. He revealed that a Ukrainian company named Fire Point has developed new long-range drones capable of traveling over 3,000 km, which were "successfully deployed" in these recent operations. Online videos, though unverified, showed plumes of smoke and flames rising from what was identified as the Antipinsky refinery in Tyumen. Russian officials, including Tyumen governor Alexander Moor, downplayed the incident, attributing it to "fallen [drone] debris" – a common phrase used to minimize successful Ukrainian attacks.
Beyond the strike in Tyumen, Ukrainian forces also targeted an oil terminal at Kerch in occupied Crimea overnight Saturday. Satellite monitoring by NASA confirmed a fire at the Kerch seaport where the terminal is situated. This appears to be part of a broader wave of strikes against Russian-held targets across Crimea, with reports of an electrical substation on fire in Bilohorsk and other attacks in Yevpatoria and the key city of Sevastopol.
Meanwhile, the human cost of the conflict continues to rise on the Ukrainian side. Local authorities reported on Sunday that Russian attacks resulted in the deaths of three people in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk and Poltava regions in eastern Ukraine. Among the casualties was a 70-year-old woman killed in Nikopol. These ongoing attacks underscore the persistent and devastating impact of the war on civilian populations. The use of advanced long-range drones by Ukraine signals a new phase in the conflict, potentially allowing them to target strategic assets deeper within Russian territory.
