BJP Leaders Detained in Bengaluru Protesting Nagendra Over Funds Scandal

Bengaluru witnessed high drama on Monday as several prominent leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were taken into police custody. They were attempting to lay siege to the Vidhana Soudha, the state's legislative assembly, demanding the immediate resignation of Minister B. Nagendra.

The protest escalated as BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra, former Deputy Chief Minister Dr. C.N. Ashwath Narayan, and other key figures like Ravikumar, C.T.

Sriramulu, along with numerous party workers, were among those detained.

This action follows their ongoing campaign both inside and outside the Legislature, fueled by the chargesheet filed against Minister Nagendra.

Minister Nagendra is embroiled in a controversy involving the alleged embezzlement of funds specifically earmarked for the welfare of Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities. The BJP alleges that the Congress government is shielding the minister, thereby cheating Dalit communities.

The demonstrators initially gathered at Freedom Park before marching towards Vidhana Soudha. Their attempt to breach the assembly premises was met with police resistance, as prohibitory orders were in effect due to the ongoing monsoon session of the state legislature.

A minor scuffle ensued as police tried to halt the advancing protesters.

To prevent the siege, law enforcement officials intervened, taking the leaders and a large number of protestors into custody. Security was significantly heightened around the Vidhana Soudha, with over 500 police personnel and Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) platoons deployed. The detained leaders were subsequently released.

This incident underscores the escalating political tensions in Karnataka, with the Opposition vowing to continue its disruption of legislative proceedings until Minister Nagendra's ouster.
