Walmart Finally Joins Tap-to-Pay Era: What You Need to Know!
Big news for shoppers! Walmart is rolling out tap-to-pay across all U.S. stores by 2026, embracing Apple Pay, Google Pay, and more. Say goodbye to QR codes and hello to convenience!
Get ready for a smoother, faster checkout experience at Walmart and Sam's Club! The retail giant has announced a significant upgrade to its payment systems, finally bringing tap-to-pay technology to its U.S. stores and clubs. Starting as early as August 24, select locations will begin accepting contactless payments, with a full nationwide rollout expected by the end of 2026. This move also includes plans to extend the convenience to fuel stations by mid-2027.
This long-awaited change means customers will soon be able to use popular mobile payment options like Apple Pay and Google Pay. You'll also have the option to link eligible Walmart, Sam's Club, and OnePay cards to your digital wallets, streamlining your shopping process. Previously, Walmart shoppers primarily relied on physical cards or Walmart Pay, which required scanning a QR code, a method many found less convenient compared to the widespread tap-to-pay options available at other retailers.
Walmart stated their rationale behind this shift: “We want customers and members to have choice in how they pay, so they can check out in the way that works best for them.” This decision aligns them with 85 percent of other retailers who already support contactless payments, making Walmart one of the last major chains to adopt the technology. The company emphasized that the goal is to offer more choices and make everyday shopping a little easier, from managing money to paying at the checkout.
This payment system overhaul is part of a series of recent changes implemented by Walmart to enhance customer convenience. For instance, in Central Florida, residents in the Greater Orlando area (specifically Apopka and Clermont) can now enjoy rapid drone delivery of retail items, a service launched in partnership with Alphabet-owned Wing. This initiative aims to serve over 50,000 homes, apartments, and businesses, further demonstrating Walmart's commitment to modernizing the shopping experience and saving customers time.
