Srinagar Airport Closure Canceled! Huge Boost for Kashmir Tourism ✈️

Srinagar International Airport has officially withdrawn its planned runway closures for repairs and maintenance. This means uninterrupted daytime flight operations will continue throughout the year 2026, a decision that brings significant relief to travelers and local businesses.

Initially, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had proposed closing the runway on Mondays and Tuesdays from July, followed by a complete two-week shutdown from October 1-16. These closures were intended for essential maintenance work on the runway, proposed by the Indian Air Force.

However, the airport authorities confirmed on Saturday (July 4, 2026) that there would be no full airfield closure. While night closures for runway maintenance will continue until October 2026, daytime operations remain unaffected. This ensures that the bustling tourism season will not be disrupted.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah played a crucial role in this development. He had raised concerns with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu regarding the proposed closures, advocating strongly for the region's interests.

CM Abdullah emphasized the importance of uninterrupted air connectivity, particularly for tourism and the region's economy. He highlighted that October is a peak tourist season, attracting visitors from West Bengal, Gujarat, and Maharashtra who come to witness Kashmir's iconic chinar trees turning golden-yellow, a major draw for tourists.

He also suggested an alternative: if the Srinagar airport absolutely had to close, the Awantipora airfield should be opened for civilian flights during the maintenance period to mitigate the impact on travel and the economy. Tourism stakeholders in the Valley had also voiced their concerns about the potential disruption.

The withdrawal of the Notam (Notice to Airmen) has been widely welcomed, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressing his gratitude for the government's prompt response. This decision is a significant relief for travelers and the local economy, ensuring smooth travel to one of India's most popular tourist destinations.

Passengers are advised to check their flight status with respective airlines and rely only on official channels for updates. However, the main message is clear: no full daytime closures, which is excellent news for anyone planning to visit Kashmir.
