Family members and rights groups say Narges Mohammadi's health has sharply deteriorated while she is held in prison, prompting renewed calls for her to receive adequate medical care. Mohammadi, 54, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her work promoting women's rights and opposing the death penalty in Iran, and she remains imprisoned in the country as concerns mount about her condition.
On Friday she was moved from prison to a local hospital in Zanjan province, a decision described by relatives as last-minute and possibly too late to prevent further harm. Her brother said her blood pressure has dropped sharply and doctors have not been able to stabilise her.
Her brother, Hamidreza Mohammadi, told reporters that she has a history of cardiac and vascular problems, including pulmonary embolism, and that treatment in Zanjan’s facilities may be insufficient. He urged a transfer to Tehran so that her own specialists, who have treated her before, can take over her care.
The Narges Mohammadi Foundation issued a statement saying she was moved to a hospital in Zanjan province after 140 days of detention and continued denial of specialised healthcare. Mohammadi’s imprisonment began in December after she criticized the authorities.
Her case has drawn renewed attention to Iran’s treatment of political activists and human rights defenders. Advocates say the health crisis highlights the urgent need for transparency and proper medical care for detainees, and they call for international concern and accountability while she remains in custody.
