Fuel prices hold steady on April 17; Delhi petrol ₹94.77/litre
Petrol and diesel rates stay largely unchanged across major Indian metros on April 17, with Delhi at ₹94.77 petrol and Mumbai higher at ₹103.54.
Fuel prices across India held steady on April 17, even as global crude markets stayed unsettled, strained by tensions in West Asia and disruptions to key shipping routes. The calm at the pump, however, has as much to do with domestic politics as international oil dynamics, with state elections keeping prices firmly in check.
In Delhi, petrol retails at ₹94.77 per litre and diesel at ₹87.67 per litre. Mumbai continues to be pricier, with petrol at ₹103.54 per litre and diesel at ₹90.03 per litre. In Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Kolkata, petrol remains above the ₹100 mark, while diesel stays below it across all three cities. Petrol and diesel rates in Chennai stand at ₹100.80 and ₹92.39 respectively.
What drives fuel prices in India? The price a consumer pays at the pump is the end result of several moving parts: global crude prices, the rupee-dollar exchange rate, central and state taxes, and refining costs. When global crude rises, India feels it almost immediately, especially if the rupee weakens against the dollar. Taxes levied by both central and state governments make up a substantial portion of the final price, which is why petrol and diesel vary by state. Refining costs depend on crude quality and processing capacity, adding another layer to the final bill.
Experts note that while international oil dynamics create the baseline, domestic politics and tax regimes often determine the price tag seen by commuters. With eyes on upcoming state elections, authorities have kept a lid on sharp price increases, a trend that could continue if crude markets stabilize.
