Kolkata's Chinese Kali Temple: Where Noodles and Momos Become Offerings

Story Behind the Temple

When I went into that place, I was surprised. I have never heard something like this before, not even from my Grandma. Gradually, it made me think about how this thing started and when. I talked with local people and they told me that, many years ago, a boy fell severely ill, and the doctors had almost given up on him. Desperate, the parents took the boy to a place under a tree where two black stones were worshipped by the locals as Maa Kali. After a few days of worship, the boy was cured. The boy's parents subsequently worshipped Maa Kali and the Chinese Kali Temple was built at this place by the Bengali and Chinese communities over time.

Noodles and Momos as Offerings

Most Hindu temples offer sweets like laddoos and fruits as prasad. But at the Chinese Kali Temple, things are a little different. Here, visitors receive Chinese dishes like vegetarian noodles, momos, stir-fried vegetables, and chop suey after prayers. This unique tradition reflects the influence of the local Chinese community, which has been a part of Kolkata for decades.

The temple still follows traditional Hindu rituals. The morning puja (prayer) happens at 9:30 AM, and the evening puja is at 7:00 PM. On special days—especially the day after the new moon—there are grand ceremonies, and more food is offered as bhog (a holy offering). Saturdays are the busiest, as they are dedicated to Goddess Kali, drawing larger crowds for worship.
