£6M Illegal Waste Cleared in Oxfordshire! 🌍 Clean-up Completed After 5 Months

A monumental five-month operation to remove a sprawling illegal waste dump near the River Cherwell in Oxfordshire has finally reached completion, officials announced. This massive undertaking saw an estimated 22,704 tonnes of refuse, enough to fill an area larger than Wembley Stadium, cleared from a field adjacent to the A34 at Kidlington.

The project, which cost an estimated £6 million, brings an end to a long-standing environmental blight that sparked widespread outrage and a criminal investigation. The site had become a critical concern last year, prompting the Environment Agency (EA) to declare a critical incident in November.

From April, specialist contractors from Acumen Waste Service worked tirelessly, removing between 15 and 30 lorry loads of rubbish daily.

The hazardous mix included tyres, shredded plastic, and general household waste, all illegally deposited across an 8,000 square metre area. Following the successful clean-up, concrete blocks have been placed at the entrance and the main gate securely padlocked to prevent any future unauthorized access.

This extensive clean-up operation is a key part of a broader government initiative to combat illegal tipping, a growing issue fueled by organized waste crime across the country. Environment, Food and Rural Affairs minister Emma Hardy visited the site during the clear-up, underscoring its importance.

Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle commented on the achievement, stating,

Communities deserve to be free from the blight of illegal waste dumping, and this clean-up shows we will bring hope back to local residents.

She added, "After years of waste crime being allowed to fester, we are taking decisive action through our crackdown, and cleaning up sites like Kidlington is just one part." Dame Angela further warned criminal gangs, emphasizing the government's intensified efforts: "By putting more officers on the frontline and using drones to catch offenders in the act, we're putting the criminal gangs on notice that there is nowhere left to hide." The Environment Agency had previously shut down the Kidlington site in October 2025, with a decision taken on December 11 to clear the rubbish.
