A Utah mother convicted of killing her husband with fentanyl-laced wine is sentenced to life without parole as prosecutors seek repayment of life-insurance payouts.
In Park City, Utah, Kouri Richins was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted in March of aggravated murder for lacing her husband Eric Richins' cocktail with fentanyl in 2022.
Prosecutors alleged she was deeply in debt and had opened life insurance policies worth more than $4 million on her husband without his knowledge, hoping to secure a future for herself. The case also included a plan weeks earlier on Valentine’s Day to poison him with a fentanyl-laced sandwich.
Richins, who authored a children’s book about grief titled Are You with Me?, faced decades behind bars as the judge handed down the sentence on what would have been her husband’s 44th birthday. Her lawyers did not comment.
During the hearing, courtroom moments drew attention: she laughed at her sister-in-law's grief while discussing her sons, who are now living with relatives and have expressed fear about her potential release.
Her conviction included four other felonies, including attempted murder, and prosecutors have asked the court to order repayment of roughly $1.39 million in life-insurance payouts to two companies if possible.
Richins' case has captivated true-crime followers and raised questions about motive, debt, and the lengths some will go to secure an inheritance.
