Bluegrass Star Billy Strings Unleashes Metal Mayhem at Ionia Freak Fair!

Bluegrass sensation Billy Strings is set to host his very first Ionia Freak Fair in his hometown of Ionia, Michigan, on August 28th and 29th, and he's bringing a surprising twist to the festival scene. While fans of his virtuosic bluegrass playing will get their fill, Strings is also unleashing a dedicated metal stage, featuring some heavy hitters from the extreme music world.

Dubbed the “Pyramid Scheme Pinball and Metal Tent,” this unique addition will showcase hardcore legends Bane, death metal veterans Cryptopsy, along with For the Fallen Dreams, Flesh and Blood Robot, Heartsick, and See You Next Tuesday. Strings himself expressed his excitement on Instagram, stating he’s been "dying to let this cat out of the bag" and that the lineup is personally curated, featuring bands he’s loved for years and even played shows with two decades ago. He promised a mix of death metal, hardcore, and grind, harking back to his early days of DIY shows.

Of course, the main stages will still be a haven for bluegrass enthusiasts. Billy Strings himself will headline both nights, joined by an impressive roster including Greensky Bluegrass, Sierra Hull, Leftover Salmon, Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper, Lindsay Lou, and Full Cord. This ensures a rich and diverse musical experience for all attendees.

Strings' foray into the metal realm isn't entirely new. Last year, he contributed a guitar solo to Cryptopsy’s single “Blasphemy Made Fresh,” calling it "one of the coolest things I’ve ever done." He also famously joined Tool onstage in 2023 to perform “Jambi.” This unique festival concept truly reflects his broad musical tastes and dedication to delivering an unforgettable experience.
