Ex-Arsenal Star Guendouzi Banned from Champions League! ⚽

Football's European governing body, UEFA, has handed Fenerbahce midfielder Matteo Guendouzi a two-match Champions League ban, alongside a hefty 50,000 euro fine, following a series of provocative actions during his club's recent play-off victory over Lyon. The incident, which included a mass brawl, saw the Turkish side secure a coveted spot in the Champions League for the first time in 18 years.

Guendouzi, a familiar face to Premier League fans from his time at Arsenal between 2018 and 2020, found himself at the heart of the controversy. Disciplinary verdicts released by UEFA detailed charges against the 27-year-old for violating decent conduct rules, "insulting players or others present at the match," and deliberately provoking spectators.

His antics reportedly included making middle-finger gestures to home fans during the warm-up and after the final whistle, shouting "Allez l'OM" (a nod to Lyon's arch-rivals Marseille, for whom Guendouzi also played), and even grabbing his crotch. Guendouzi later claimed that Lyon supporters had directed insults at his family throughout the game, which he said sparked his reaction.

The ban means Guendouzi will miss Fenerbahce’s upcoming home fixture against Roma next Thursday and their subsequent trip to Aston Villa on 14 October. He is expected to be available for the team’s final six games in the Champions League league phase, with his return slated for the match against Slavia Prague on 20 October.

The chaotic atmosphere of the match saw other players and staff face disciplinary action.

Fenerbahce forward Mason Greenwood received a 30,000 euro fine and a one-game suspension, which has been deferred for a one-year probation period, also for violating rules of decent conduct.

Additionally, Lyon's goalkeeper coach, Antonio Ferreira, was handed a three-match Europa League ban (with two additional games deferred) for "serious assault" after aiming a leaping kick towards Guendouzi near the tunnel.

Both Guendouzi and Greenwood joined Fenerbahce during the recent off-season, part of a significant investment by the Istanbul-based club aiming to rejuvenate its European presence. However, their Champions League journey now begins with immediate challenges, highlighting the fine line between passion and punishable misconduct on the European stage.
