Congress Leaders Arrested for Defacing CEC's Agra Home!
High drama in Agra! Two Congress leaders arrested for defacing CEC Gyanesh Kumar's home with "Gyanesh Gaddar" slogans. Protests against alleged poll irregularities intensify nationwide.
Agra witnessed a dramatic turn of events on Monday, September 29, 2026, as two Congress leaders were arrested for allegedly defacing the residence of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The incident unfolded during a fervent protest by Congress workers outside Mr.
Kumar's home in Vijay Nagar, where they chanted slogans and spray-painted the main gate and a wall with the words “Gyanesh Gaddar, Gyanesh Chor” (Gyanesh traitor, Gyanesh thief). Police swiftly registered a First Information Report (FIR) following the defacement.
Agra Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Bajrang Prasad confirmed the arrests of Congress leader Mukesh Dhangar and general secretary (organisation) Anil Yadav, stating that a case was filed at the Hari Parvat police station.
Authorities are also actively searching for other Congress leaders believed to be involved in the demonstration.
The protest saw a large turnout of Congress workers and affiliated organisations, who not only defaced the property but also put up stickers and pasted pamphlets outside the CEC's residence. Visuals of the protest and the stark defacement quickly spread across social media, drawing widespread attention.
The Indian Youth Congress, in a defiant post on X, publicly endorsed the action, stating, “In Agra, Congress workers blackened with soot the house of 'Gaddar Gyanesh'. The way Modi and Shah, in collusion with Gyanesh, have looted elections across different parts of the country over the past several years is directly an act of treason against the country.
We will ensure that Gyanesh is punished.” This demonstration in Agra was part of a larger, state-wide agitation by the Congress party, reflecting intensifying confrontation between the party and the Election Commission. Similar protests, including the burning of Mr.
Kumar's effigy and protest marches, were reported across several districts including Varanasi, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Raebareli, Sultanpur, Sonbhadra, Sitapur, Unnao, Maharajganj, and Mathura. In Lucknow, hundreds of Congress workers attempted to gherao the Election Commission office but were halted by a heavy police force, leading to scuffles. Despite the police intervention, Congress workers managed to burn an effigy of Mr.
Kumar before being arrested and later released.
Senior leaders like MP Ujjwal Raman Singh and former MLA Anugrah Narayan Singh also participated in events in Prayagraj.
The core of these protests stems from the Congress party's allegations that the Election Commission has acted in favour of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, particularly concerning the functioning of the poll panel and alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been particularly vocal, accusing Mr.
Kumar of unconstitutional actions and even labeling his alleged conduct as “treason.” The protests have gained momentum following an investigation published last week by The Indian Express, which reportedly raised questions about the Election Commission's structure and decisions.
