India's athletes delivered a compelling performance at the 2026 Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, securing a remarkable total of 85 medals. This impressive haul, which included 21 gold medals, positioned India fourth overall, showcasing the nation's growing prowess on the international sporting stage during the Games from September 19 to October 4.
The Indian contingent, comprising 503 dedicated athletes (269 men and 234 women), competed across 36 diverse sporting disciplines.
Standout performances were particularly noted in athletics, shooting, and the newly introduced mixed martial arts events, where Indian athletes truly shone.
While this year's tally fell short of the record-breaking 106 medals achieved at the 2023 Asian Games, the team's strong showing underscores a consistent and determined effort. Beyond India's individual achievements, the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games themselves were hailed as a success by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).
Despite some complaints regarding accommodations and transportation, the event saw a staggering 54 world records shattered and welcomed approximately 17,000 athletes, demonstrating the power of sports to unite and inspire.
The OCA also celebrated a nearly 20% increase in revenue, further solidifying the Games' positive impact.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt congratulations to Team India, praising their inspiring performances and celebrating their passion and sporting spirit. He also emphasized the critical need for enhanced focus on grassroots sports development across the country, advocating for initiatives that empower future generations of athletes to continue India's legacy of excellence in sports.
