Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs, George Kurian, has resigned from his post, with President Droupadi Murmu accepting his resignation. The move comes as his Rajya Sabha term concluded on June 21, and he was not re-nominated. Kurian’s departure from the Union cabinet signals a likely return to Kerala politics, marking a significant shift in his career trajectory.
Amidst these political developments, Mr. Kurian recently delivered a powerful message to the nation's youth, urging them to transition from seeking employment to actively creating it. Speaking at the National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT-C) on Monday, May 18, he highlighted the success of the PM VIKAS programme. This initiative, he explained, is pivotal in empowering members of minority communities to become entrepreneurs and technically skilled professionals, emphasizing its role in building a highly skilled and empowered society.
Mr. Kurian cited numerous instances of women successfully venturing into entrepreneurship and others gaining valuable technical qualifications through the PM VIKAS scheme. He underscored that the programme's reach extends beyond students and working professionals, aiming for the holistic upliftment of minority communities. Challenging students from India's premier technical institutions, he encouraged them to rethink conventional career paths and embrace innovation. He specifically mentioned regional hurdles in cutting-edge fields like the Internet of Things (IoT) at IIIT Kottayam and chip design at IIT Palakkad, pushing students to overcome them.
He passionately appealed to young Indians to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset, utilizing available government funding to launch startups from their homes. His vision involves encouraging experimentation and scaling these ventures to foster competitiveness in the modern world. The event at NIT-C was meticulously organized by the institute’s Centre for Continuing Education and Skill Development (CCESD).
A key highlight of the event was the formal signing of a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This significant agreement was exchanged by V.B. Sameer Kumar, Registrar of the Central University of Kerala, Sunil Jacob John, Registrar of NIT-C, and Shah Faiz Ahmed, Under Secretary in the Ministry of Minority Affairs. The signing took place in the distinguished presence of NIT-C Director Prasad Krishna and Central University of Kerala Vice-Chancellor (V-C) Siddu P. Algur, solidifying collaborative efforts to further skill development and entrepreneurship.
