INDIA Bloc Tensions: CPI(M) Seeks Clarity on BJP 'Deal' Claims
Ahead of a crucial INDIA bloc meeting, CPI(M)'s M.A. Baby demands answers from Congress on Rahul Gandhi's allegations of a BJP tie-up. Will unity hold?
The unity of the INDIA bloc is once again under scrutiny as Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary M.A. Baby has formally sought clarification from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. This demand comes just days before a pivotal meeting of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc, scheduled for June 8 in the national capital.
Baby's concern stems from repeated allegations made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during the recent Kerala assembly elections campaign. Gandhi had publicly claimed that the CPI(M) had an understanding or "deal" with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In a letter addressed to Kharge, Baby highlighted these "systematic campaigns" by the Congress leadership, asserting that such accusations undermine the very spirit of the alliance.
The upcoming June 8 meeting is particularly significant, being the first gathering of the INDIA bloc since December 2023. Since then, the alliance faced a setback in the Lok Sabha elections and only secured two out of 14 state elections. While prominent leaders like Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee, TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, and Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav are expected to attend, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has announced its non-participation. The DMK cited the Congress's decision to align with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) as a "betrayal."
Adding another layer to the internal dynamics, M.A. Baby has stated he will not attend Monday's meeting due to "prior engagements in Kerala." Instead, party lawmaker John Brittas will represent the CPI(M). This marks a departure from the previous consistent presence of late CPI(M) veteran Sitaram Yechury, who was instrumental in all prior Opposition group meetings. The growing friction between key alliance partners over past election rhetoric and strategic decisions presents a considerable challenge for the INDIA bloc as it attempts to regroup and strategize for future political endeavors.
