China Eastern to restart Shanghai-Delhi flights from November 9
State-backed China Eastern will run thrice-weekly Shanghai-Delhi flights starting Nov 9, as India - China air connectivity resumes and other carriers weigh schedules.
State-backed China Eastern Airlines will commence flights between Shanghai and New Delhi from November 9 with thrice weekly services. The route will be operated by an Airbus A330-200 wide-body aircraft on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
This move is part of a broader effort to restore air connectivity between India and China, with plans to restart services from October 26. The announcements come a little over a fortnight after the Indian government issued a press statement on the decision to resume air connectivity after five years, followed by IndiGo’s Kolkata to Guangzhou service from October 26 and Air India’s plan to restart flights to Shanghai before the end of the year.
DGCA officials said there are also requests from other Chinese carriers for passenger services, including Air China (Beijing-Delhi) and Shandong (Kunming-Delhi), as well as for cargo services from China Southern (Guangzhou-Delhi) and Sichuan Airlines (Chengdu-Delhi).
According to the International Air Transport Association, India-China passenger traffic grew at double-digit rates before the disruption and had doubled between 2011 and 2019 to nearly 10 lakh annual passengers, translating into roughly a dozen daily flights.
Even with the restart, the India-China corridor remains modest compared with links between China and Japan, underscoring the untapped potential for future growth in cross-border travel and trade.
