AIADMK Reunited: EPS and SP Velumani Factions Patch Up After Intense Split

The drama within the AIADMK has finally reached a turning point as the rival factions led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) and former Minister S.P. Velumani decided to bury the hatchet on Wednesday. Just two weeks after a vertical split rocked the party, the two sides have arrived at a truce, signaling a significant shift in the Tamil Nadu political landscape.
The trouble began on May 13 during a crucial vote of confidence for Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s government. In a surprising move, 25 rebel legislators led by Velumani voted in favor of the motion, while 22 MLAs sticking with EPS voted against it. This led to both groups filing disqualification petitions against each other, creating a massive rift within the party.
However, the situation took another turn when three MLAs from the rebel camp—Maragatham Kumaravel, S. Jayakumar, and P. Sathyabama—resigned and joined the ruling TVK. Perhaps sensing the need for unity, the remaining rebel MLAs met with EPS at his residence and reaffirmed him as their leader.
On Wednesday, the rebel group took a formal step toward reconciliation by meeting with Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar at the Secretariat. They submitted letters asking for their conduct during the vote to be condoned. More importantly, Velumani confirmed that both factions have withdrawn their mutual disqualification petitions. The Speaker is expected to announce his final decision on these submissions this Thursday.
For now, it seems the AIADMK is looking to move past the internal chaos and present a united front once again.
