UN Backs PM Modi's Call for UNSC Reform: Time to Reflect 2026, Not 1945!

The United Nations has thrown its weight behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi's impassioned plea for a comprehensive overhaul of the UN Security Council (UNSC) and other global institutions. The endorsement came at the BRICS 2026 summit, where Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, highlighted the urgent need for these bodies to reflect the realities of the 21st century, rather than the geopolitical landscape of 1945.

Dujarric unequivocally stated that developing countries currently lack adequate representation in the institutions that shape global rules. He emphasized that the current composition of the Security Council, with its five permanent members, is a relic of the past and no longer mirrors today's world. This sentiment extends to international financial institutions, all of which, he argued, need to evolve to remain relevant and effective.

During the BRICS 2026 session on inclusive global governance, Prime Minister Modi underscored the growing disparity between decision-makers and the nations most affected by global policies. He pointed out that countries from the Global South frequently find themselves at the forefront of global crises but are relegated to the "back row" when it comes to international decision-making.

To rectify this imbalance, Modi proposed transforming the existing governance framework into a "platform of partnership" where every nation's voice is heard and valued.

Further, PM Modi suggested that BRICS member states collaborate to draft ten unified proposals.

These proposals would focus on crucial areas like representation, responsiveness, and rule-making, with the ambitious goal of establishing a formal "BRICS Reform Roadmap" by the time of the next summit. This initiative aims to ensure that global governance structures are truly democratic and equitable.

The call for reform received strong reinforcement through the unanimously adopted New Delhi Declaration. This declaration reaffirmed member states' commitment to upgrading international governance, specifically to make it more representative of developing nations and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Dujarric lauded India's leadership during its BRICS chairship, acknowledging the successful consensus achieved for the joint statement.

He stressed that fostering constructive dialogue is paramount to ensuring global institutions remain agile, effective, and truly reflective of contemporary economic and geopolitical realities.

This marks a significant moment in the ongoing global dialogue about reforming multilateral institutions, with a clear push for greater inclusivity and fairness on the international stage.
